RELIABILITY STRATEGY

Teledyne-ODI uses a multi-pronged strategy to reliability engineering that focuses on reliability planning, engineering analysis and verification through life testing and field data. This customer focused approach focuses on

  • Elimination of costly failures during deployment and during use.

  • Assure and demonstrate that the required reliability has been achieved.

  • Continuous improvement in the reliability and availability of products.

RELIABILITY BY DESIGN

Reliability begins at the conception of the design; Teledyne-ODI’s reliability engineering processes are fully integrated into the product development process to realize the reliability goals. This is achieved through a three step process of careful reliability planning, flawless execution and verification through reliability testing.

To achieve and exceed the customer’s stringent reliability requirements, the following tools are integrated into the development process.

Failure Modes , Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA’s)

Fault Tree Analysis / Root Cause Analysis. (FTA/RCA)

Reliability Block Diagram Analysis (RBDA)

Failure Reporting , Analysis and Corrective Actions (FRACAS)

Accelerated Life Testing and Environmental Stress Screening (ALT/ESS)

Design for Reliability, with the help of the above tools, focuses on selecting the appropriate materials, redundancy in designs and elimination of single point failures. Extensive qualification and reliability testing assures that the required reliability has been achieved.

RELIABILITY BY EXCELLENCE IN FIELD PERFORMANCE

Teledyne-ODI follows a systematic approach to assuring the customers of the field reliability of its products. Reliability and Availability data are compiled and analyzed to provide the most useful and relevant data to the customer. By combining reliability engineering through design techniques with reliability assurance through appropriate metrics, reliability engineering remains at the core of the entire product life cycle. This principle is illustrated in the following bath-tub curve.

The superior field record of ODI products is a testament to Teledyne-ODI’s excellence in design and process reliability. Teledyne also takes utmost care to ensure the integrity of the field performance data. The process of reliability data collection and analysis is based on international standards such as ISO 14224 and industry best practices. The ODI reliability data pyramid shown below illustrates the different levels of the process.

RELIABILITY BY TESTING

Teledyne-ODI employs extensive testing of  products including accelerated life testing to improve the long-term reliability of its designs. Qualification of the products includes testing to  verify common industry standards. The suite of tests used by ODI include:

  • Life Cycle Mate-Demate Testing

  • Accelerated Life Testing

  • Highly Accelerated Life Testing

  • Mechanical shock and Vibration

  • Thermal shock testing

  • Hydrostatic Pressure and Cycle Testing

  • Environmental Stress Screening

  • Multi-Stress Composite Testing

  • AC/DC voltage qualification

  • Hose Pull Test to Failure

  • Material Testing

 Test results are carefully analyzed and documented through test reports. Periodic re-qualification of designs ensures compliance to changing requirements in the sub-sea industry. The testing program is carefully planned with consideration to compliance to international standards such  as ISO 13628 and industry standards such as NHT-I52-00073 , GS EP SPS 021 etc.

RELIABILITY BY RESEARCH & TRAINING

Teledyne-ODI believes in investing in training and research in reliability engineering. With Certified Reliability Engineers (CRE) on staff , the entire design team is trained on cutting-edge reliability tools and techniques.
